The sàndolo is one of the most common boats in the lagoon and its name appears to be from the Latin word sandalium or rather sandal, precisely for its form. The boat has a flat bottom adapted for the low sea floor, and its shape indeed resembles a sandal.
The sàndolo varies from 5 to 10 meters in length and was traditionally used for fishing, but nowadays it is primarily used as transportation or in boat races also known as regate.
